Visiting Ames
Planning a trip to the area and want to see what NASA Ames has to offer? Look here for information on directions to the center, a map of the center, obtaining a visitors badge or signing up for a tour.

(As of June 2000, tours will no longer be offered until further notice ).

There are many places at Ames that are open to the public. Check out the Moffett Museum, the Visitor Center and gift shop , the Educator Resource Center, the California Air and Space Center and the Teacher Institute.

About NASA Ames
NASA Ames Research Center is one of the twelve NASA centers located throughout the U.S. Ames Research Center is located at the southern end of San Francisco Bay in the heart of the “Silicon Valley” at the Moffett Federal Airfield.

Ames is a world-class research facility that provides vital information and technology for the United States aerospace program. Ames has two primary missions: Astrobiology and Aviation Operations. Ames is also NASA’s Center of Excellence for Information Technology. NASA Ames Home Page

Directions and Badging
Location:

    NASA Ames is located at Moffett Field Airfield, which borders the cities of Mountain View and Sunnyvale.

Directions:

    From San Francisco International Airport (SFO) travel South US 101 and exit at Moffett Field.

    From San Jose Airport (SJC) travel North US 101 and exit at Moffett Field.

Badging:

    All visitors are welcome to the Ames Education Resource Center or the Ames Visitor Center. Guests do not need a badge to enter these facilities.

    For access inside Ames Research Center or Moffett Field, visitors should go to the Visitor Badging Office, located at the Moffett Field Main Gate, to get a badge. An Ames or Moffett Employee must sponsor any visit inside the Center.

Tours and Destinations
Educator Resource Center (ERC) provides educators with NASA related instructional materials suitable for use in the classroom. Much of the material is free; videotapes and slides may be copied. Resources include: curriculum materials, classroom activities, Internet access, lesson plans, computer programs, videos, 35 mm slides and publications. Contact: ERC (650) 504-3574

Tours of Ames Be sure to plan ahead when planning a tour of Ames. Visit this site for information on how to make a reservation.

Visitor Center/Gift Shop The visitor center offers exhibits related to NASA’s exciting programs and missions, and no visit is complete without a souvenir from the gift shop.

Future Destinations

California Air and Space Center (CASC) Learn more about this future educational and entertainment facility, which will reside in historic Hangar 1. The CASC will showcase America’s achievements in aeronautics and space and will support NASA’s mission at the Ames Research Complex while heightening public awareness of the importance of science and technology to our future.

Teacher Institute The California Air and Space Center Teacher Institute will provide professional development opportunities for K-12 teachers of science, mathematics and technology. The Institute will include the NASA Academy, which will team the knowledge of NASA scientists and engineers with the pedagogical knowledge of master teachers to provide interdisciplinary, laboratory-based professional development courses. It will also feature NASA Curriculum Online which will bring the exciting story of NASA research projects to teachers as these stories unfold.
